PC-BSD Quick Guide
Hardware requirements
PC-BSD has moderate hardware requirements and commonly uses less resource than its commercial counterparts. To use PC-BSD, the minimum recommended specification is:
- An i686 CPU:
- AMD Opteron
- AMD Athlon
- AMD Athlon XP
- AMD Athlon 64
- AMD Athlon 64 X2
- AMD Athlon FX
- AMD Duron
- AMD Sempron
- AMD Turion 64
- AMD Turion 64 X2
- Intel Pentium Pro
- Intel Pentium II
- Intel Pentium III
- Intel Celeron
- Intel Xeon
- Intel Pentium 4
- Intel Pentium M
- Intel Pentium D
- Intel Pentium Extreme Edition
- Intel Core
- Intel Core 2
- 128MB RAM
- 4GB of free hard drive space (Either partition, or entire disk) for the desktop version; 8GB for the server version.
- CD-ROM Drive (6x or better)
- Network card (optional, although some form of Network/Internet connection is strongly recommended)
- Sound card (optional)
However, it is advised to have 512MB of RAM if possible. If you want to play modern video games, you should use a fast CPU, and if you want to create a collection of tunes and movies on your computer, you should use a larger hard disk drive too.
Most hardware should work with PC-BSD, but in some cases, cheap hardware has been reported not to work. If you use mainstream or top-end hardware, such as those that feature VIA or NVIDIA chipsets, it will usually work flawlessly.
